Dr. Forbes Walker has a BS in plant science and MS in seed technology from the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh, Scotland. After receiving his MS, he spent almost 10 years working on agricultural extension, research and development projects in several countries in Africa (Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria and Zambia). Based on these experiences, he earned a Ph.D. in soil science at North Carolina State University.

In 1998, he joined the University of Tennessee Extension as the environmental soil specialist. His work has focused on developing and educating farmers on agricultural best management practices that optimize production without negatively impacting the environment, including no-till systems for organic production, manure and nutrient management and watershed management. He currently has projects with partners in Lesotho developing conservation agricultural systems for small-holder farmers and agricultural and community development in Guatemala.
